Are You a Good Candidate for All-on-4® Implants?

Dr. Hellwig Jul 24, 2015

A patient after her dentures have been affixed to her dental implantsIf dental implants represent the optimal method for replacing missing teeth, then All-on-4® represents the optimal dental implant system for securing full-arch dentures. However, not everyone is a suitable candidate for this treatment technique. Dr. Peter Hellwig carefully evaluates All-on-4® implant candidates during consultations at his San Diego dental practice to ensure that they are well suited to the treatment before he allows them to proceed with implant surgery.

Are you a good candidate for All-on-4® implants? Find out for yourself by meeting with Dr. Hellwig today.

The Benefits of All-on-4® Implants

For people who are missing most or all of their natural teeth, dental implants can be used to support full-arch dentures. Implant-supported dentures represent the absolute pinnacle of restoration methods when it comes to the replacement of missing teeth. No other treatment comes close in terms of its ability to restore form, function, and health to the mouth.

Up until recently, one of the only disadvantages of implant-supported dentures was that they often required as many as 10 implants to secure per arch. Therefore, patients who wanted to secure both upper and lower dentures into their mouths might require up to 20 implants to be surgically embedded into their jaws. In all likelihood, most of these patients had probably experienced a fair amount of jaw bone disintegration since the loss of their teeth, which meant that significant bone grafting and sinus augmentation would have been required prior to implant placement. The healing time associated with both the bone grafting and implant placement procedures would have been extensive, as well.

Fortunately, advancements in treatment planning and implant technology have resulted in the creation of the All-on-4® implant system. The All-on-4® system allows for the attachment of full-arch dentures on just four strategically placed dental implants. That’s right - a full set of lower or upper dentures can be placed on just four implants. Because the rear implants are placed at an angle to optimize bone-to-implant ratio, the need for bone grafting is minimized and often eliminated. Healing and treatment times are cut down substantially, as well, meaning that patients are able to achieve fully functional, aesthetically pleasing smiles in far less time than is necessary with traditional implant-supported dentures.

Candidacy for All-on-4® Dental Implants

Although All-on-4® implants offer numerous benefits, not all patients will be good candidates for the treatment. In order to be considered a good candidate, a patient:

  • Must be in good enough health to undergo a surgical procedure.
  • Should not be a smoker, or should be willing to quit smoking, as tobacco use is one of the most common causes of implant failure.
  • Should have reasonably healthy gums; if not, periodontal surgery may be necessary prior to implant placement.
  • Should have sufficient jaw bone density; if not, bone grafting may be necessary prior to implant placement.
  • Must have realistic expectations of the procedure.
