Implant-supported Dentures Candidates

Dr. Hellwig Oct 24, 2015

A denture prosthesis in a gloved handIf you are missing most or all of your teeth, and you are looking for the strongest tooth replacement option available, implant-supported dentures may be right for you. Implant-supported dentures replace your missing teeth from root to crown, providing you with the most stable restoration possible. The treatment involves the placement of dental implants, which are surgically placed in the jawbone, replacing the natural tooth root. High quality dentures can then be attached to the dental implants, holding the prosthetic piece securely in place. Dr. Peter Hellwig can examine your mouth to determine if you are a good candidate for implant-supported dentures. Contact our San Diego practice today to schedule your personal consultation.

Implant-supported Dentures Candidates

To determine if you are a good candidate for implant-supported dentures, Dr. Hellwig will perform a comprehensive evaluation. This will involve the use of CT scanning technology to check the health and density of your jawbone, and to precisely plan your treatment. If your jawbone has degenerated, you may require a bone grafting procedure before you can receive dental implants.

Dr. Hellwig will also check the health of your gums and any remaining teeth. If you have cavities or a root canal infection, these will need to be treated or the affected tooth will have to be extracted prior to dental implant placement. If you have gum disease, the infection will need to be treated and the health of the gums improved in order to undergo dental implant surgery.

In addition, implant-supported dentures candidates should be in good general health, not smoke, and not suffer from bruxism.

Types of Dental Implants

Dr. Hellwig places and restores several types of implants to meet the needs of a wide range of patients.

  • Endosteal implants: Traditional endosteal implants can support a removable denture prosthesis. However, this type of implant requires adequate jaw structure, when compared to other implant options.
  • Subperiosteal implants: These implants may be recommended if the jawbone is too short to accommodate traditional endosteal implants. The subperiosteal implant consists of a metal framework placed over the jaw, but beneath the gum line.
  • Mini dental implants: Mini dental implants are similar to traditional endosteal implants, but they are smaller in diameter. They are an ideal option when patients lack sufficient bone density and height.
  • All-on-4®: The All-on-4® approach is ideal for patients that lack bone density and require the replacement of all of the teeth on the upper and/or lower jaw. This treatment involves the placement of four implants per arch, placed at an angle to maximize jawbone space.

The type of implant that is right for you will depend on the results of your CT scan and exam. Dr. Hellwig will explain your options to you during your consultation.

After the dental implants are placed, Dr. Hellwig will secure the beautiful, natural looking denture prosthesis. The replacement teeth are made of high quality, durable dental porcelain, and the shape, color, and size of the teeth will be designed to complement your surrounding features.
