Dental Implants San Diego
Dental implants have revolutionized the way patients wear and use their dental restorations. These small, titanium posts are placed on or inserted within a patient's natural jaw bone, creating a strong foundation for a dental crown, bridge, or denture.
Dr. Peter Hellwig is a skilled dental implantologist who provides several types of dental implants to meet patients' unique needs. To learn more about dental implants, contact Dr. Hellwig's San Diego office today and schedule your consultation.
What is a Dental Implant?
Dental implants provide a foundation on which Dr. Hellwig can place specialized prostheses. He offers a range of advanced types of implants.
Endosteal implants describe implants that are surgically placed within the jaw bone. Eventually, the jaw bone begins to fuse with these small titanium posts, securing them in place and allowing them to support restorations.
There are a few variations of endosteal implants. Traditional implants can support one or more individual restorations, or dental prostheses that comprise more than one dental crown fused together, such as a bridge. In many cases, just a few implants can support a partial or full-arch prosthesis such as a denture.
What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?
Dental implants provide a wealth of benefits, including:
- Increased confidence when smiling
- The ability to eat more foods than a traditional prosthesis allows
- The removal of pressure upon adjacent natural teeth to support prostheses, like a dental bridge
- Easier cleaning, since implant-supported prostheses are not removed and are cleaned just like natural teeth
- In the case of endosteal implants, stimulation to stop the jaw bone from reabsorbing into the body after tooth loss
- A more filled out jaw line and cheeks, which can reduce the aged appearance that often results from tooth loss
Dental implants should be considered an investment in your oral health and in your smile's beauty. The long-lasting support they add to your smile is worth this investment for many patients.
Are Dental Implants Right for Me?
Dr. Hellwig will perform a thorough evaluation of your oral health, mouth, and jaw before deciding if implants are the right treatment for you. He uses photographs, digital X-rays, and a computed tomography (CT) scanner to both create a plan for you and help you better understand your procedures.
Dental implant candidates must have a sufficient amount of jaw bone available to support their implants. The reabsorption of jaw bone after tooth loss causes your jaw to recede gradually. Implants inserted within a too-weak jaw bone can loosen or cause the bone to crack. Using our CT scanner, we can determine whether your jaw is able to support implants properly. In the case that your jaw bone has reabsorbed too much, you may be a candidate for bone grafting surgery. During this treatment, extra donor bone is added to your jaw, eventually fusing with your natural tissue and adding strength and volume to support implants.
